It’s no secret that the contemporary art scene is hard to break into. We asked some of today’s most successful artists to share their advice with you. Here’s what they said:
Inspiration is Everywhere
“Look at as much art as you can. Look at everything from high art to low. Travel as much as possible. Travel the whole world and see other cultures.”
— Red Grooms, visual artist
It's OK to Have a Day Job
"Out of graduate school, I chose to clean houses and waitress so I could have enough time in my studio. I was living on maybe $5 a day, but I was making my work.”
— Kathy Butterly, ceramicist
Be Patient
“It’s never a smooth path. Many of my projects are 10 years in the making.”
— Tim Burton, director, producer, writer, animator
Work Hard
“The most important thing is to just show up. Don’t get intimidated by the road ahead. Just focus on working on your art every day. Nobody else is going to come around and make you practice.”
— Mark Bradford, visual artist
Practice, practice, practice. If you’re doing it right, you’re never going to stop learning.”
— Chip Kidd, graphic designer
